The Clovis FFA Veterinary Science team is ranked in the top five nationally

Members of the Clovis FFA chapter can now add a national ranking to their resume.

The Clovis FFA Veterinary Science team placed in the top five in the nation this week at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The team includes students Emma Smalley (Clovis North student), Navraj Sanhan (Clovis East student), Leanne Chavez (Clovis East student) and Sofia Vizcarra (Clovis High student).

The team took 4th place out of 46 teams.

The team was selected to represent California at nationals when they won the state championship last spring.

Students participating in the competition answer questions about veterinary knowledge, diagnose and explain treatment plans for animals in scenarios, and answer medical mathematics questions.

Students also collaborate and then present their findings to a panel of judges.

They had to work individually to answer veterinary knowledge questions, select equipment and tools and demonstrate restraint and clinical skills, said Clovis FFA team advisor and coach Jennifer Knight.

“The scenarios are examples of real-world cases that could be handled in today’s veterinary practice, Knight said.

All Clovis FFA members participate in the Animal Science Technical Education track.

Sanhan, Chavez and Vizcarra graduated in June but returned for the opportunity to compete at the national level.

Learning and traveling with my teammates is a great experience,” Chavez said.

We had a great time and we will remember it for the rest of our lives,” Chavez said

The Clovis FFA Veterinary Sciences team has already earned national rankings in 2016.
