“Out of the Darkness Walk” taking place in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — Community members from across West Tennessee are coming together to take steps to prevent suicide.

Today Jackson State Community College hosted the West Tennessee Out of the Darkness March.

The march began at 11 a.m. today and invites friends, family members and more to walk shoulder-to-shoulder in support of those who have lost their lives to suicide.

And for those who can’t go to the event, there are also volunteer opportunities.

The Out of the Darkness Walk movement began in 2004 and each year offers those affected by suicide a unique opportunity to unite and share their stories.

The walks take place in communities across the country and support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Education and Support Programs.

The foundation’s goal this year is to reduce the annual suicide rate in the U.S. by 20 percent by 2025.

This year’s West TN Walk raised well over $3,000 for the foundation’s overall goal.
