The Texas Longhorns offensive line continues to struggle against Vanderbilt

Twice Texas Longhorns gave Vanderbilt a short lead, the Commodores had the largest lead and scored 14 points. The turnovers, as well as the 10 penalties the Longhorns scored, either took points away from the Texas team or added more to Vanderbilt’s favor.

With a bye week between this game and the home game against Florida scheduled for Nov. 9, the Longhorn offense needs to work on avoiding these easy mistakes to avoid problems against the Gators and the rest of the teams on the schedule.

The Texas O-line has given up four sacks in addition to nine tackles for loss, and while that’s a slight improvement over the six sacks allowed last Saturday against Georgia, it’s far from the standard that head coach Steve Sarkisian preaches. This line is experienced and there is no excuse not to play at the highest level, and we know they can be better. The offensive line has allowed just six sacks through the first six games of the season, and that number has almost doubled to 11 over the past few weeks.

Sarkisian attributes much of the problems to the number of penalty calls the team had.

“I was a little frustrated,” Sarkisian said. “It’s one thing that you get a holding penalty on a one-yard run, we used to get holding penalties on fragments, and then you go back. You go beyond the schedule. I think when we’re on schedule offensively we’re really good, but in the second half we went off schedule and things became difficult for us.

Texas was forced to punt four times for 145 yards, still less than Vanderbilt’s five punts for 241 yards.

The next two weeks will be crucial in establishing a solid attacking line, which will need to improve communication and discipline in the future.
