Police exhumed the bodies of two people who died during protests led by the Student Movement Against Discrimination in Cumilla.

The bodies of Md Rifat (16) and Md Babu Mia (23) were exhumed in the district’s Daudkandi upazila yesterday (October 26), in line with the court’s order for investigation.

Among them, Rifat was a tenth-grade student and Babu was a mason.

According to police, Rifat was seriously injured after being shot in the chest during the August 4 student movement. He died that night and the family buried him without an autopsy.

On August 18, a person named Abdur Razzak introduced himself as Rifat’s uncle and filed a murder case at the Daudkandi model police station 14 days after Rifat’s death.

On September 1, Rifat’s mother, Nipa Begum, filed another murder case in the Cumilla court, which is being investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

Police said that in both cases, former member of parliament engineer Abdus Sabur, former upazila chairman Major (retd) Mohammad Ali Sumon, former mayor of Naim Municipality Yusuf Sein and 400 others were charged.

Meanwhile, Babu was shot in the chest and died on August 5 in front of the Daudkandi model police station.

He too was buried without an autopsy. Later, Babu’s neighbor, Liton Ahmed Pavel, filed a murder case, naming 48 people and leaving 150 others unnamed.

Police said both bodies were exhumed by court order because no autopsies were performed. Deputy Commissioner (Land) Redwan Islam of Daudkandi, the investigating officer handling the case and Sub-Inspector of Daudkandi Model Police Station Harunur Rashid were present.

“The families of the deceased buried them because it was not possible to perform an autopsy at that time. The bodies were sent to Cumilla Medical College mortuary. After post-mortem, the bodies will be handed over to their families again, Harunur said. .

AC (Land) Redwan said further procedures would be undertaken following the results of the post-mortem examination.
