MCC recognized for outstanding achievements in student voter registration and turnout during the 2022 midterm elections

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge recognized Middlesex Community College for its nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that contributed to high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections. Middlesex received the highest voting rate in Boston Votes in 2022: Community College; Boston Votes 2022 Highest Enrollment Rate: Community College; and the Bronze Seal from ALL IN, reflecting its commitment to ensuring that nonpartisan democratic engagement is a hallmark of campus life.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge enables colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student engagement in democracy. MCC was recognized along with more than 500 campuses based on data from Tufts University’s National Study on Learning, Voting and Engagement, which showed that colleges and universities had the second-highest student voter turnout in the midterm elections since NSLVE began measuring it data.

“Middlesex is proud to receive recognition from ALL IN for motivating our students to engage in the voting process,” said MCC President Phil Sisson. “In an effort to support our diverse student population beyond the classroom, tremendous effort has been made across the college to host events and opportunities that prepare our students to be active members of their communities. This critical work helps students understand the importance of voting and the impact and difference they can have in solving issues that directly affect them.”

“The ALL In distinction means we have a solid plan of action to promote civic education, political engagement and student voting on our campuses,” said MCC Civic and Service Learning Coordinator Milissa Duncan. “Part of MCC’s mission is to educate students who are socially engaged and to emphasize to young people the importance of voting. By supporting the whole student, we want them to be actively engaged in their communities and responsible citizens.”

“The ALL IN Awards were created to celebrate nonpartisan democratic commitment and the exceptional campus voter registration and turnout achieved on our ALL IN campuses. Ahead of the 2024 elections, ALL IN campuses are ready to build on the momentum from 2022 to ensure their communities are ready to make an even greater impact this fall,” said ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge Executive Director Jennifer Domagal-Goldman. “ALL IN is proud to celebrate and honor top-performing campuses like Middlesex that demonstrate that nonpartisan student voting engagement is possible and effective.”

More than 1,060 institutions educating more than 10 million students participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, which supports colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student voting engagement.

“MCC students and their families are directly affected by many government decisions and political policies regarding education, student loan debt, health care, child care, and the economy and employment,” Duncan said. “Voting gives them influence and a political voice to influence these decisions. Today’s students are the future of our democracy, and we want to foster a lifelong ethic of civic responsibility and empower students to make a difference in local, state and national government.”
