A Dhaka court today (October 27) sentenced former independent lawmaker Advocate Syed Sayedul Haque Suman to jail after he was denied bail after completing his five-day detention in an attempt to murder case.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatuallah passed this order.

Although the accused’s lawyer filed an application for bail, the prosecutor’s office opposed it.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered him to be sent to jail, said Mirpur Model police station sub-inspector Abdul Halim, who is also the investigating officer in the case.

Earlier, on October 22, a Dhaka court sent him to five-day judicial custody in a case lodged at Mirpur Model police station.

Suman was arrested on charges of involvement in the murder of a student during the student-led movement in July and August.

Before his arrest, lawyer Suman said on his verified Facebook account, “I am going with the police. See you in court. “Everyone pray for me.”

Suman was elected as an independent candidate in the controversial January 7 polls from Habiganj-4 constituency.
