Chicago shooting: Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting in West Ridge after shots fired at first responders: police

CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago Police Department and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning on the city’s North Side.

Police said that upon arriving at the scene of the earlier shooting, officers exchanged fire with the armed suspect.

West Ridge residents told ABC7 what happened was horrific. Police spent the entire day investigating the scene and the suspect is currently in hospital.

The Chicago Police Department provided an update on the incident during a news conference Saturday.

The Chicago Police Department provided an update Saturday on the officer-involved shooting in West Rogers Park.

Chicago police said the 39-year-old victim was shot around 9:35 a.m. while walking in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue. The armed perpetrator approached the victim from behind and shot him in the shoulder.

Officers and paramedics arrived on scene and neighbors in the area immediately provided aid to the victim while the suspect fled.

“It shows the goodness of the people in this area who will stop to help other people,” said resident John Wong. – That’s one thing I like about this neighborhood.

According to the police, around 9:55 a.m., the 23-year-old perpetrator came out of the alley and fired shots at officers and paramedics.

It’s a nice residential neighborhood, but we’ve noticed that, like every other neighborhood in Chicago, there’s more of a criminal element.

Chicago police said the suspect continued to exchange gunfire with officers for about two minutes.

Police said the suspect was shot multiple times by officers at 6800 North Washtenaw Avenue. Officers provided aid to the man, who was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was initially described as critical.

People living near the scene said this type of violence had become too common in their neighborhood.

“We like this neighborhood because it’s a nice residential neighborhood, but we’ve noticed that like every other neighborhood in Chicago, there’s more of a criminal element here,” Wong said. “Increased security risk due to shootings and car thefts.”

Police said the 39-year-old victim was treated for a gunshot wound and released. The victim’s gender and identity were not immediately known.

According to CPD, no police officers or CFD members were injured in the incident.

Further information was not immediately available. CPD and COPA continue to investigate.
