Identified: Suspect arrested after Oakhurst crime spree that left K9 injured

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that a Mariposa man is facing multiple charges following a series of violent events Wednesday in Oakhurst, where he allegedly rammed vehicles, shot at a sheriff’s K9 cruiser and was injured in an exchange of weapons with deputies.

Authorities said the incident began shortly after 3:30 p.m., when the owner recognized the vehicle as stolen near Highway 49 and State Route 41.

The owner of the stolen vehicle called 911, providing dispatchers with updates on the vehicle’s location. During the pursuit, the suspect, identified by authorities as 41-year-old Allen Scott Williams of Mariposa, rammed the owner’s car.

The suspect avoids spikes while driving off-road

Deputies set up a perimeter with spikes. Before reaching the roadblock, Williams drove off the road, abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

Deputies pursued him down a long driveway, during which Williams fired and seriously wounded K9 Obie with a shotgun. Gunfire was exchanged and both Williams and the K9 were injured.

A deputy paramedic provided medical care to Williams, who was airlifted to a Fresno hospital for treatment.

He is expected to recover and faces charges including probation violation, possession of ammunition and assault with a deadly weapon, as well as new charges stemming from Wednesday’s incident, authorities said.

K9 Obie was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital, where X-rays revealed his body was full of shotgun pellets. Although the pellets will remain in his body, Obie is expected to recover after an extensive rehabilitation process, although he will remain in hospital for several days.

The sheriff praises deputies for their quick action

Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue praised his team’s quick action, crediting Obie’s potentially life-saving bravery.

“I want to commend the quick and decisive response of our MPs whose actions prevented further danger to the Oakhurst community. The arrest of a dangerous criminal like Williams is a testament to their commitment to public safety. Our thoughts and prayers remain with our beloved K9 Obie as he recovers. “Both’s courage and selfless service could have saved the deputy president’s life, and we are deeply grateful for his sacrifice and courage,” Pogue said.

The deputy-involved shooting is under investigation by the Madera Police Department and will be reviewed by the Madera County District Attorney’s Office. An internal administrative investigation is also ongoing and the staff involved have been placed on standard administrative leave.

Authorities said Williams remains under supervision at the hospital and will be booked into the Madera County Jail upon his release.
