How the Rams’ young OL shined during his recent comeback

The Los Angeles Rams (5-5) were thrilled to have second-year offensive lineman Steve Avila back after he suffered an MCL injury in Week 1 that sidelined him for nine weeks before in week ten, he returned to the game in a loss to the Dolphins. He has been doing great since returning to the lineup.

Avila has only allowed one quarterback to be pressured in his last two games since returning from injury. After eight games, he hasn’t skipped a beat in his high level of protection. The former TCU Horned Frog was a pleasant surprise early in his career.

In addition to Avila, veteran/center Jonah Jackson returns to action on the offensive front. Both have been sidelined since the first two weeks of the season, and having them back in the lineup is paramount to the success of the Rams offense.

Following losses to the Dolphins in both games, Rams head coach Sean McVay commented on both players returning to the lineup after the offensive line allowed four sacks. Although it wasn’t in Avila, McVay he highly praised both players, who are among the best in their positions.

“I trust these guys,” McVay said last week after the loss to the Dolphins. “It was their first game in a while where we talked about Jonah (Jackson) and Steve (Avila), but I’ll check the tape. We’ll see. I know the character of these guys will come back to work and continue to do everything we can to play as well as we can, just like everyone else. At this point, we all have to do this every week, whether we win or lose, where we can get better and where we can get back to work.”

There have been no signs of ongoing problems since returning Avila and an MCL injury that occurred earlier in the season. If he continues to stay healthy and produce his current numbers, quarterback Matthew Stafford will be at ease with Avila blocking him.

The Rams will prepare for an Eagles defense that will attack the quarterback at a high pace. 10th in the NFL in total sacks (28), that will go to Avila, Jacksonand keep the rest of the offensive front Stafford clean and convenient in your pocket, just like last week when bags were not allowed.
