Police say the Jeep that crashed three cars, including a CTA bus, and killed another driver on the South Side was stolen

CHICAGO – One person was killed and more than a dozen others injured Wednesday evening when a stolen Jeep being followed by police collided with a CTA bus and another vehicle on the city’s South Side.

Chicago police say the Jeep that caused a three-car crash was stolen and the driver of the second vehicle it hit was killed. Police also found four weapons in the stolen vehicle.

No police vehicles were involved in the accident and no officers were injured.

According to posts shared by Chicago Fire officers on X On Wednesday, around 7:30 p.m., there was an accident near the intersection of East 60th Street and South State Street in the Washington Park neighborhood, involving two cars and a bus.

Police say 3rd Precinct officers observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed toward oncoming traffic in the 6800 block of S. State St. Officers then followed the vehicle to the intersection of the 6000 block of S. State St., where it struck another vehicle and then struck a CTA bus.

According to police, the driver of the second vehicle was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Meanwhile, police say 10 people on the CTA bus, including the driver, were taken to local hospitals with various non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the police, three people traveling in the stolen vehicle were detained and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Photos released by fire officials Wednesday evening showed two heavily damaged cars on a road in the area, as well as several emergency vehicles working at the scene.

No charges have been filed against the suspects yet and the Major Accident Unit is investigating the crash.
