A 16-year-old Hinsdale South student allegedly brought a loaded gun to school

DARIEN, sick.A 16-year-old Hinsdale South High School student has been charged with bringing a loaded gun to school, authorities said Friday.

The juvenile faces one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in a public place and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a person under 18 years of age.

On Thursday, school officials received information about a student who was reportedly carrying a loaded firearm. Authorities later identified the weapon as a Taurus GX-4 9mm handgun.

The student was found on campus the same day and taken into custody without incident. According to the prosecutor, he was taken to the Darien police station for questioning.

“There is absolutely no reason for a 16-year-old boy to possess a loaded firearm, especially at school, as alleged in this case,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “My office takes any indication of potential violence involving the school very seriously. We are fully committed to the safety of our students, staff and visitors to the school, and anyone suspected of the type of conduct alleged in this case will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice accordingly. “

The teenager appeared in court on Friday morning for a detention hearing, where the judge ordered him to remain in custody until his next hearing on December 2.
