A murder investigation has been launched after one man was shot dead in Birmingham overnight and another was left in a serious condition.

West Midlands Police officers were called to Rotton Park Road, near the junction with City Road in Edgbaston, just before 11pm on Friday to reports that two people had been shot.

A man in his thirties was found injured at a bus stop and taken to hospital, where his condition is critical.

A second man, approximately 20 years old, was found in the car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and officers are providing support.

Firearms officers arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder in nearby Waterloo Road just before 12.30pm, who remains in custody today.

Officers remain at the scene today, roads are still closed and security patrols will be carried out.

Inspector Nick Barnes, of West Midlands Police’s homicide squad, said: “This is a tragic incident and we have been working throughout the night to understand exactly what happened.

“We have already made good progress and have arrested the suspect, but I still need to hear from everyone who was in the area and whom we have not yet spoken to.

“The incident occurred near the busy junction with City Road and you may have dashcam or mobile phone footage of the area just before 11pm.

“We really need to hear from you so we can build as clear a picture as possible of what happened.”
