Starfield 2 would have the same advantage as Skyrim, says former Bethesda creator

More than a year has passed since then Field of Stars fired. At the time, Bethesda’s RPG space travel didn’t have the impact the team had hoped for. Taking what made Skyrim and Fallout so engaging and spreading it across the galaxy inadvertently ruined the magic. Simply discovering Bethesda games is a major part of what makes them so compelling, and Starfield has lost that. However, if the team does create Starfield 2, one former Bethesda designer says the opportunity should result in a significantly improved game.

Now that Shattered Space is here, general reception Field of Stars has become established. The RPG it has some amazing quests and stories, but Bethesda’s previous tight world design isn’t as present. Every corner of Skyrim and Fallout 4 has something new to discover, another landmark to explore, and a seamless flow that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Starfield is unfortunately not the case.

However, as former Starfield, Skyrim, Oblivion and Fallout designer Bruce Nesmith put it, Bethesda’s latest release doesn’t have the same advantages as the team’s older games. Starfield is a bold new direction for the worlds Bethesda is known for, and with time to reevaluate, a potential sequel may be a necessary step.

“When we were building Skyrim, we had a huge advantage of Oblivion, which had a huge advantage of Morrowind,” Nesmith tells VideoGamer interview. “All these things were for us. All we had to do was keep improving and adding new things. We didn’t have to start from scratch. If we had to start from scratch, it would take us another two or three years of development.

“I can’t wait for Starfield 2,” Nesmith continues. “I think it’s going to be a really amazing match because it’s going to touch on a lot of the issues that people are talking about. It will be able to take what is currently there, add a lot of new things, and fix a lot of these problems.

“If you look at the first Dragon Age, the first Assassin’s Creed, the first game in a multi-franchise, they usually show glimpses of brilliance among a lot of other things that don’t quite catch the eye,” Nesmith adds. “No, they are not that popular and popular. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a second or third version of a game to really spice things up.

I can see exactly where Nesmith is coming from. If Starfield 2 is indeed Bethesda’s work, there’s a chance it could improve upon what the original work created. I didn’t like the abundance of barren planets in Starfield, but I still enjoyed many of the characters, quests, and mechanics. The sheer scale of Starfield is what lets it down, so if a sequel were to condense this experience, it would do wonders. Even Todd Howard himself admits Starfield was ‘irresponsibly large’ so maybe this is something Bethesda wants to limit in the next game.

Despite its initial reception, the game has seen numerous game-changing updates since its launch. Not only that Starfield’s car it has greatly improved exploration, but smaller tweaks like better map graphics make everything feel less barren.
