Body camera footage shows a man being arrested after he allegedly shot into a Tacoma building

A 44-year-old man accused of shooting at security lights at a Tacoma business tried to escape arrest before ultimately being taken into police custody.

Officers were dispatched at 2:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a construction alarm going off in the 3900 block of South Orchard Street on Oct. 25. After arriving at the scene, officers noticed bullet damage to the building, on X, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

The post said officers were waiting for backup when they heard gunshots nearby and moved next to the police car to hide. Police approached the fenced area and saw the alleged shooter inside the vehicle.

Charging documents show the man was in a van belonging to an electric company located next to the location where police were dispatched. The man left the van and allegedly did not comply with the police call.

The officers cornered the man, who was arrested after a short chase. Police also found an abandoned gun and believe the man was shooting at the business’ security lights, the post said.

Court documents show the man was booked into the Pierce County Jail and prosecutors charged him with two counts of first-degree burglary.

Officers searched the building but did not find anyone inside. According to prosecutors, the man told police he was in the van because he needed a warm place to sleep for the night.
