Storm Bert live weather: Man dies after tree falls on car as Storm Bert brings heavy snow and wind to UK

Scotland is struggling with “ferocious” winds – with gusts reaching speeds of 170 km/hposted at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time

Winds from Storm Bert have increased in recent hours, with maximum wind gusts of 82mph recorded at Capel Curig (Conwy) and 75mph at Needles, an exposed spot on the western tip of the Isle of Wight.

Head to the highlands of Scotland where the winds will be even fiercer – gusts of up to 105mph (1,245m) over the Cairngorms during a blizzard.

The wind is affecting transport, with some ferry and train connections canceled.

Snow was also a factor serious transport disruptions.

Snow has turned to rain in recent hours in northern England, where the worst of the conditions are now over. Heavy snowfall will give way to sleet in many areas of southern Scotland and the Central Belt.

However, a Met Office amber weather warning for snow in northern Scotland remains in place until 5pm and further snowfall is expected.

The the first flood warnings have already been issued in Scotland, England and Wales. Heavy rain will continue to accumulate by the hour, particularly across the hills of Wales and southwest England, with the risk of flooding increasing throughout the rest of today, tonight and tomorrow.

The snow from Storm Bert may give way to rain for many, but the threat of disruption from this multi-hazard storm is far from over.
