A missing patient at a hospital on the Isles of Scilly has died in a bicycle accident

A missing hospital patient has died after his bicycle collided with a car parked in the Isles of Scilly, police said.

The 60-year-old man was reported missing on Saturday at around 02:20 GMT after he left the island’s only hospital in St Marys.

At around 04:30 GMT, an ambulance was called and the cyclist, who was later confirmed missing, died in hospital.

Supt Ben Asprey said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased man who are being supported by specialist officers.”

Devon and Cornwall Police said it would make a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident.

The services added that the man’s next of kin had been informed.
