Suicide survivors remember those who died before the holiday season

EL PASO COUNTY, CO. (KRDO) – The holidays can be a difficult time for families grieving the loss of loved ones, especially those who have lost their lives to suicide.

On Saturday, the group Heartbeat Survivors of Suicide invited people to turn their pain into community.

Every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, International Suicide Survivors Day is observed.

Betty Vanthournout, executive president of Heartbeat Survivors of Suicide, tells KRDO13 an important tradition today is to remember those we have lost and support those left behind.

“Statistics have shown that for those of us who have lost a loved one to suicide, we are approximately 50% more likely to commit suicide ourselves. So if you reach out to us and seek help in whatever form works for you, that’s very important, Vanthournout said.

If you’re struggling with the blues, Vanthournout has some suggestions to help you get through the holidays.

He says to come up with a plan in advance. This may mean maintaining old traditions that include the memory of a loved one, or starting a completely new tradition. But no matter what, it’s important to be honest about what you can handle and always reach out if you need extra help.
