Storm Bert issues flood warnings after 80mph winds and heavy rain hit UK

Due to heavy rain and strong winds brought by Storm Bert, 200 flood alerts have been issued across the UK.

As a result of the combination of heavy rain and melting snow, 63 flood warnings have been issued, meaning flooding is imminent and residents should take “immediate action”, the authority says. Environment Agency (EA).

There are also 195 flood alerts in force, indicating that flooding is possible.

Published by the Met Office yellow warnings for rain and wind covering much of the country until Sunday evening.

On Saturday, Storm Bert killed three men on the roads and left thousands of homes without power.

Flood warnings apply to communities and stretches of rivers in parts of the South West, the Welsh border and Yorkshire, meaning the EA says residents should “act now” to prepare for flooding of homes and businesses.

The Met Office warned that Storm Bert is likely to cause “hazardous coastal conditions” and disruption to southern England and parts of Wales, issuing a yellow weather warning for winds that lasts until 9pm on Sunday.

There is also a wind warning from midday to midnight covering parts of the Scottish Highlands and a high wind warning across Northern Ireland until 6pm on Sunday.

A yellow weather warning for Sunday rainfall is also in place for parts of south-east Wales until 1pm and for Herefordshire, London and southern England until 11.45pm.

The Met Office warned that flooded roads could cut off some communities, particularly in the west of England.

The Met Office said heavy and persistent rain would hit southwest England on Sunday, with between 100 and 150 mm of rain likely to fall on Dartmoor in some places.

The ruling came after as much as 64.4 mm of rain fell in 12 hours on Saturday in Capel Curig, north Wales, and wind gusts of up to 130 km/h were recorded in a Welsh village.

Thousands of homes were left without power on Saturday when strong winds downed power lines. Northern Powergrid said 27,000 customers in the North East, Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire were affected.

In a post on Page X on Saturday evening, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “My thoughts are with all those affected by Storm Bert.

“For those who lost power, my department will remain in close contact with utility companies as they work to ensure power is restored as quickly as possible and assist those affected.”

Hampshire Police said that of the three people who died, a 60-year-old man died after a tree fell on a car on the A34 near Winchester.

At 7.47am on Saturday, police were called to the southbound carriageway between Kings Worthy and Winnall and found the driver of a black Mercedes E350 dead at the scene.

There have been two other fatal collisions, including a 34-year-old man who died in a single-vehicle collision in the early hours of Saturday morning while driving towards Saltaire.

Meanwhile, in Northamptonshire, a man in his 40s died in a crash on the A45 near Flore.

It is unclear whether any of these incidents were directly related to the storm.

Five adults and five children had to be rescued from a house in Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, near Llangollen in north Wales, after a landslide, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

Travel disruptions the service continued until Sunday and ferry operator DFDS canceled some services until Monday, including the route from Newhaven to Dieppe.

Rail networks canceled some services on Saturday and urged passengers to check routes before traveling.

Avanti West Coast canceled its service between Edinburgh and Carlisle throughout the day on Saturday, with the next direct service to Carlisle not scheduled until Sunday afternoon.

Train journeys to and from Manchester Piccadilly were disrupted on Saturday evening as flooding on the Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent route blocked some lines.
