Former Chicago White Sox All-Star on the wrong side of World Series history for the Yankees

The New York Yankees lost Game 2 of the World Series 4-2 on Saturday night, leaving them 2-0 in the best-of-seven series. The Yankees, who are seeking their first championship since 2009, are two losses away from ending their season.

The second-game defeat was defined by left-hander Carlos Rodon’s poor starting pitching. The lefty, who signed a six-year contract before the 2023 season, lasted just 3.1 innings. He gave up all four runs on homers by Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman.

Unfortunately, this outing found him on the wrong side of Yankees history.

Per Yankees statistician Katie Sharp on social media:

Yankee starters who allow 3+ HR in the first 3 innings of a World Series game:

Carlos Rodon 2024, Game 2 vs. Dodgers
Catfish Hunter 1977 Game 2 vs. Dodgers

Rodon is 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA in four playoff starts this season. The 31-year-old struck out 25 batters in 17.2 innings.

After a disastrous and injury-riddled 2023, Rodon rebounded this season, going 16-9 with an ERA of 3.96. In total, he struck out 195 times.

Rodon made his major league debut in 2015 with the Chicago White Sox, remaining on the South Side until 2021. He made the All-Star game in Chicago and pitched a no-hitter while winning 13 games in his final season.

He then spent one great year with the San Francisco Giants, earning his mega contract with the team Yankees. He is 75-63 years old for the rest of his life.
