The gunman was killed in a shooting near the Israeli embassy in Jordan and three policemen were injured

A gunman is dead in Jordan after wounding three police officers in a shooting near Jordan Embassy of Israel early Sunday, authorities said.

An attacker opened fire in the Rabiah district capital of Amman, Jordan’s Directorate of Public Security said in a statement. The police chased the bandit, shooting and killing him.

“He was chased and surrounded and therefore started shooting at the security forces, which in turn applied the rules of engagement, which led to the killing of the perpetrator,” the statement read.

Jordan’s Communications Minister Mohamed Momani described the shooting to Reuters as a terrorist attack targeting the country’s public security forces.

“Interfering with the nation’s security and attacking security personnel will be met with a strong response,” Momani told the outlet.

Although authorities did not immediately identify shooter or motive, Momani said the killer had a criminal past related to drug dealing.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Jordan is a close Western ally that made peace with Israel in 1994, although relations have been strained over Israel’s war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks.
