An Omaha man serving time for assault has died in prison

A 56-year-old Omaha man serving a long sentence for a crash that left a young girl paralyzed died Thursday at the Nebraska State Prison in Lincoln.

Kenneth Greer died at the hospital, according to the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Greer was serving a 19- to 20-year sentence after being found guilty of assault in August 2020.

While the cause of death has not yet been determined, the statement said Greer was being treated for an illness. As with the death of an inmate in custody, a grand jury will conduct the investigation.

Greer was initially charged with causing serious bodily injury while driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury. In the plea agreement, the charges were changed to second-degree assault.

According to Omaha police, on November 6, 2019, just before 5:30 p.m., Greer was driving his brother’s Chevy Silverado 2000 pickup truck west on Grand Avenue and struck the rear passenger fender of a 2016 Kia Sorento traveling northbound on 48th Street. The Kia spun out and Greer fled westbound, then struck a 2012 Dodge Journey that was traveling eastbound. Greer then ran a stop sign at 50th and Grand Avenue, striking the rear of a 2012 Buick Verano.
