Rashford also scored a quick goal in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match, finding the net after three minutes in Cardiff after the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho in December 2018.

The effort was even quicker and must have been satisfying for Amorim, given that he trusted Amad for the right wing spot in his new formation and chose Rashford ahead of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the key central attacking role.

The guests had other opportunities. Alejandro Garnacho curled the ball just wide of goal and Diogo Dalot rushed into the box to meet Casemiro’s angled pass.

Unlike the defeat to West Ham, which led to Ten Hag’s dismissal, when he scored from a similar position with the goal at his mercy, this time Dalot kept his shot on target. However, he lacked the power to test Arijanet Murić.

However, it was by no means an uneventful United performance and Onana was arguably the visitors’ key figure even before Ipswich equalised.

The Cameroon international’s first save, which missed Delap, was stunning. Leif Davis waited for the right moment and then passed to Delap, who only had to beat the United goalkeeper.

Onana didn’t just stop the shot. He also had enough strength to push the ball to safety rather than giving Ipswich the rebound.

His defending in the second half was equally important as Delap was the first to connect Wes Burns’ low cross and pushed the ball towards goal with the back of his foot from just two yards. Onana’s reaction was appropriate.

United were light in attack. Garnacho ran into the box but looked as if he was trying to pass straight to Rashford before Jens Cajuste slipped in and robbed the Argentine.

Amorim tried to turn things around with a series of changes in the second half, but apart from a Fernandes free-kick, his team posed no threat.
