A pedestrian crossing was destroyed for the eighth time and the authorities received a mysterious warning

Councilors hope that a camera placed at the top of the crossing will shed some light on the identity of the perpetrator.

Mark Hood, Green Party councilor for KCC and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, said: “We have had a whole spate of vandalism at this junction. We tried to determine the motivation… It’s like demanding a ransom.

“We removed the sound from the transition because we thought it might arouse someone.

“We set up surveillance at the crossing and cooperated with the police, but they still decided to attack.

“This person clearly has a grudge against the council, but none of us know what that is.”

“It’s a drain on every taxpayer.”

Mr Hood said the average cost of replacing the crossing panels was £3,500 and the crossing had already been vandalized at least eight times.

“I’m trying to count how many times something like this has happened and how many thousands of pounds it has cost. I’d say it happened about eight times at this intersection.

“Our advice is on to the verge of bankruptcy. We cannot continue to refurbish the panels. This seems like just a way to get back at the council, but it is a burden on every taxpayer in Kent.

“We have to pay for them from the highways budget.”

Last month, KCC announced that it was facing “significant financial pressure” according to the council. would have to save £225 million over the next three years to prevent bankruptcy.

Signals stolen

The council currently has a £1.1 billion repair backlog modernize the highway network According to Hood, it meets the required standards. The crimes of the mysterious attackers are only adding to this bookmark.

In 2022, the council was forced to pay £32,000 after thieves stole 10 beacons from three pelican crossings in Tonbridge, the most popular of which was the one on Shipbourne Road.

City authorities suspected they were being sold on eBay as novelty doorbells after they were spotted on the site.

“We may have to downgrade the ride,” Hood said. “This will not protect people with disabilities. This is a real problem.

“Naughty message” in shit

The councilor gave time to the antics of grudge holders, claiming that their decision to target the crossing next to two schools could affect the safety of children using it.

The crossing has been disabled, and due to the threatening nature of the message, government employees cannot be put at risk to fix the problem, Hood said.

“Hundreds of students and elderly people use the crossing every day, and there are no lights at the moment.

“A crude message was written in the plaster pasted on the panel: “F— KCC.”
