HOLDEN, Mo. (KCTV) – Two people escaped from a head-on crash near Holden, Missouri on Saturday after brakes failed on one of their cars.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on November 23.

A 17-year-old driving a 2005 GMC was traveling east on Highway 58 when he tried to slow down for traffic but his brakes failed. To avoid hitting the cars in front of him, he swerved into the westbound lane but hit another car, which stopped head-on.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and emergency services assisted in transporting the 17-year-old to Children’s Mercy for treatment of moderate injuries. A 49-year-old man who was struck head-on was taken to Western Missouri Hospital with also moderate injuries.

Both cars were completely damaged in the accident. MSHP said neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
