Australia vs India cricket: Pat Cummins burned by Virat Kohli’s brutal error that could cost the Test series

Both Mark Taylor and Matthew Hayden questioned the issue Surprising captain Pat Cummins this allowed Virat Kohli to rediscover his form with a shining centenary in first test cricket. The Australians are heading towards a humiliating defeat in Perth, but worse still, they have also allowed Kohli to return to form.

The 36-year-old scored just two centuries in his last 60 Test innings before scoring 100 against Australia on Sunday. In India’s recent 3-0 defeat at home to New Zealand, he scored just 93 runs at an average of 15.5, and questions were raised , whether he has completed the test level.

But the Indian superstar rediscovered his magic in a crushing blow that could have consequences for the entire franchise. When Kohli returned to form and India are one step away from leading the series 1-0the tourists are now hot favorites to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Cummins resorted to very defensive fielding positions as Yashavi Jaiswal hit a brilliant 161 and the Australian skipper tried to contain the run of runs by putting the fielders back on the boundary. However, both Hayden and Taylor said Cummins needs to push harder once Kohli gets into the box and puts more pressure on him.

Cummins kept the defenders at bay and allowed Kohli to get going too easily, starting the innings with simple singles and switching shots. Speaking to Channel 7 after the stumble, Hayden said Cummins needed to put more pressure on Kohli to ensure he couldn’t get going so easily and his failure backfired brutally.

“They missed a few tricks with Virat Kohli early in his innings,” Hayden said. “Nathan Lyon had center fielder, one catch offside and middle wicket. I felt like it was very easy for him to hit the shot.

“You can’t give a sucker an equal break when the guy is under pressure like he is. The field we actually ended up with – two slips, no point, straight – also showed the outside edge of his bat. It felt a little more frustrating when he hit the teeth, it was too late.

“It could be the same story with yesterday’s partnership as well. It took a long time to analyze the short ball options. Jaiswal looked vulnerable. Maybe the little things with Pat Cummins, being able to think through those decisions. They were inaccurate. shocked by the batting average (in the first innings) and as we now see, bombs are falling again.”

On Triple M radio, former Test captain Taylor expressed exactly the same sentiment. Taylor said Cummins was far too passive and predicted this could haunt Australia for the rest of the Test series.

Australia would need a miracle to avoid a 1-0 series defeat after their record at stumps dropped to 3-12, chasing a record total of 534 points. And if they do lose the first Test, they will have to achieve something they have not done for 27 years.

The last time Australia lost the first Test and came back to win the series was in 1997. On this occasion, it was Taylor’s side who took nine wickets in the first Ashes Test against England before they were able to challenge for a 3-Triumph 2 series.
