Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect following a machete attack

Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect after receiving information that a man was attacked with a machete early Friday morning.

Police said they were called to the Health Sciences Center just after 5 a.m. on reports of a man suffering life-changing injuries following an armed robbery.

Early inquiries revealed the 56-year-old victim was walking along Ellice Avenue near Beverley Street when he was attacked from behind by a person believed to be armed with a machete. The attack is believed to have been unprovoked as the suspect and victim were not known to each other.

The suspect was described as an Indigenous male, over five feet ten inches tall, wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit (WPS) has taken over the investigation, although no arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact WPS or Crime Stoppers.
