The open source remake of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault receives its first beta

The day has come! Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, including the Spearhead and Breakthrough expansions, can be easily played on modern systems, with various improvements thanks to the OpenMoHAA project.

v0.80.0-beta has just been announced, which states: “After implementing all the features from the original game and increasing stability, the project is moving from alpha to beta.” — so maybe it’s finally time to jump into the action.

More: “The main goal of OpenMoHAA is to ensure the future and continuity of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault on all platforms/architectures by providing new fixes/features. Thanks to the ioquake3 project and the FAKK SDK, OpenMoHAA has already reached more than half of its goal: an open source version of MoH:AA (based on version 2.40) that is fully compatible with the original game (in terms of protocol, resources and scripts).”

The game has a lot of improvements such as full 64-bit support, SDL2 backend, OpenAL audio support, cross-platform support, many bug fixes, demo recording, smoother animations, bots for servers, IP locks for servers and so on. ON.

For anyone who’s tried it before, the highlights of what’s new in the beta include:

  • For simplicity, 3 launchers have been added, allowing you to launch Allied Assault, Spearhead or Breakthrough
  • Execution

    • Better lighting
    • Decals/level marks now render
    • Dynamic lights now render correctly and there are no longer issues with the ground flashing when firing rockets
    • Creatures are now better illuminated by the orb lights (some artifacts are still present)
    • Solar flares are now rendered

  • AI fixes (animations, logic, seeing through windows, holding turrets, speech animation…)
  • Animation fixes + smoother animations
  • Audio system improvement
  • Better results
  • Spearhead and Breakthrough tutorial videos and game introductions work
  • Crash repair
  • Demos are now supported using +set com_target_demo 1 run command line
  • Fixed incorrect loading of mods
  • Fixed strange motion artifacts when running the server on ARM
  • Fewer breakdowns
  • Network profiling
  • Script engine improvements + better mod support

See more about the project GitHub.

Running it on Linux was quite easy. I used it Hero launcher from which you want to download the game GOGthen dropped the release files from OpenMoHAA into the installed folder and ran it.
