A wrong-way driver was killed in a head-on crash on State Route 76 in Oceanside

A suspected DUI driver was killed and the driver he hit in a head-on collision was injured on state Route 76 in Oceanside Saturday night.

Police determined that a 30-year-old man was driving a tan Buick Century driving the wrong way east on SR-76, west of Melrose Drive, when he collided with a white Honda Clarity just before 9:30 p.m.

He died before he could be transported to hospital.

The driver of the Honda was a 20-year-old woman from Oceanside, he suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to Palomar Hospital in Escondido.

The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Team is investigating the crash. Police suspect alcohol and/or drugs may have been a factor.

While the police intervened, part of the road was closed to traffic.
