A gray Volvo and a blue Peugeot were also involved in the incident.

The driver of the Volvo, a 45-year-old man from Wymondham, Norfolk, suffered serious injuries. The Nissan and Peugeot drivers were unharmed.

A fifth unidentified vehicle left the scene before officers arrived.

Det Sgt Craig Wheeler said: “This was a nasty collision which left three people seriously injured.

“I would like to hear from anyone who was driving on the eastbound or westbound carriageway and who may have dashcam footage of any collisions that occurred or vehicles that passed through the scene at any stage.

“I would also like to appeal to the occupants of the vehicle that left the scene to contact us as you may have vital information that will greatly assist our investigation.”
