ORIGINAL STORY (Published 11/14/24):

CABARRUS CO., N.C. – Cabarrus County detectives hope a new lead will help them identify a woman found dead on the side of the road. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said a fisherman came across the body of a woman who has not yet been identified. A 911 caller found the woman’s body on the edge of the Rocky River Bridge along U.S. Highway 601 on November 4. WCCB received a 911 call from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.

“Hey, uh, I’m calling because I just found a dead body,” the caller told the 911 dispatcher. “It looks like a woman. He has a garbage bag on his head.

Lt. Chris Smith said the body was decomposing when deputies found it. Investigators do not yet know who the woman is. Detectives have released photos of three clues in this case. The latest photo shows a woman’s toenail. It shows a white-painted nail decorated with crystals and a gold pendant in the shape of a palm tree. The woman also wore a gold chain studded with 15 rainbow stones. Investigators said the woman was wearing sweatpants with a prominent image of a race car placed under green, white and red lines. The checkered pattern is underneath the race car on the pants.

Lt. Smith said tips have turned up, but so far none of them have proven to be reliable. The sheriff’s office wants to show these photos to as many people as possible in hopes of identifying the woman’s body. The medical examiner is still investigating how the woman died. Lt. Smith expressed hope that more information about the woman’s identity would come to light once the autopsy was completed.
