One person dead after three alarms in Greektown

A large fire that spread to multiple row houses in Baltimore’s Greektown neighborhood Monday evening left one person dead, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department. Several others were displaced, although officials did not say how many.

Crews responded to a three-alarm fire shortly after 5 p.m. in the 300 block of South Newkirk Street. At least three townhouses burst into flames and about seven others suffered water and smoke damage, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said.

“We have a lot of residents displaced,” Wallace said. “We’ll be sitting here for a few hours. We have a lot of different issues that we need to address. Traffic disruptions will continue to occur in this area.”

It is unclear how the fire started. Wallace said neighbors have security footage from their homes that could help with the investigation.

“We do not have a determined cause at this time,” Wallace said. “When we begin the search, our investigators will go with us and try to determine the cause.”

According to the fire brigade, the fire was brought under control and extinguished at 7:36 p.m.
