EXCLUSIVE: Bay Area parents speak out after 2-day-old baby appears on camera allegedly abused by nanny

SAN FRANCISCO — A shocking case of alleged child molestation is shocking not only the Bay Area, but the entire nation. A nanny was caught on camera beating and even throwing a baby who had just returned from the hospital. Now the child’s parents are speaking out to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

“We all thought we could trust her. We never imagined something like this could happen,” said the father, identified only as “T” in the surveillance video.

Warning: Some viewers may find the film disturbing

The video shows baby monitor recordings from the home of a Hillsborough couple. The parents, who asked for only the initials “D” and “T”, had just brought their daughter “H” home from the hospital in late September.

On the second day, they hired a nanny to help overnight. A few weeks later they say they discovered something terrifying.

“It’s definitely terrifying for any parent or family,” the father said.

They claim the alleged abuse was so graphic that it could not be shown on television. The videos show the nanny allegedly hitting the child, shaking her aggressively, and at one point throwing her across the room on multiple nights. You can hear a child crying in despair.

“Just a few days of this type of violence can have consequences for the child’s entire life,” says Baby H’s father.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said his office is working closely with Hillsborough police on the case.

“What struck me most as soon as I read this case was the age of the victim. That’s what’s so special to us,” Wagstaffe said.

“If we can convict them, prison, in my opinion, is the only answer for someone who would do something like this repeatedly — not once out of anger or loss of self-control, but again,” Wagstaffe said. “If the evidence supports this, this person could easily end up in prison for double-digit years.”

KGO-TV is not naming the former nanny or showing her face because she has not been charged.

She was hired by “D” and “T” thanks to a mention on social media.

“From the phone conversation we had with her, it’s very credible and she seems to be a good nanny,” the father said.

“Of course, we also interviewed the nanny,” he added.

Parents say they noticed what they described as aggressive behavior just weeks after she was hired. After she was fired, they reviewed recordings from the baby monitor, which they believed revealed the abuse.

Dr. Charles Lorbeer, an expert witness in child abuse cases, says regularly checking baby monitor recordings can be crucial.

“Some of these cameras clear themselves within three days, so we have this bit of window built in,” he said. “It may take up to two minutes to fast forward. “Especially in the first half hour to an hour, you have to follow it very carefully, especially with someone you don’t know.”

“Of course we feel guilty as parents,” the father said.

After publishing the video on social media, the family received enormous support. An online petition calling for accountability has gathered more than 33,000 signatures.

While Baby H has undergone an MRI and full-body X-ray, her parents continue to monitor her for signs of long-term damage. As difficult as it is, mom and dad are speaking out for a reason.

“My goal is to warn parents about this nanny. I don’t want any family, child or mother to experience this again,” says the child’s mother.

The San Mateo County prosecutor plans to file charges in the coming weeks.
