British-American author Barbara Taylor Bradford who is an author A woman of substance among other best-selling novels, she has died at the age of 91, her publisher Harper Collins confirmed on Monday.

They said Bradford died yesterday after a short illness.

The publisher’s chief executive, Charlie Redmayne, described her as “a truly exceptional writer whose first book, an international bestseller A woman of substanceit changed the lives of so many who read it – and still does to this day.”

The book was first published in 1979 and was later adapted into a successful drama series.




Television adaptation titled A woman of substance starring Jenny Seagrove and Liam Neeson, it became a worldwide hit and earned two Emmy nominations.

“It is with the deepest and profoundest sadness that we announce the death of international best-selling author Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE,” the statement read.

She died “peacefully in her home on November 24, 2024, after a short illness and surrounded by her loved ones until the end,” the statement reads.

In her “phenomenal career,” Barbara has written a total of 40 novels, all of which “have become global bestsellers,” her publisher said, adding that her latest book, titled The miracle of it all which hit stores in November 2023.

Born and raised in Leeds, UK, Barbara began writing fiction at the age of seven, and sold her first story to a magazine for seven shillings and sixpence when she was 10.

She left school at 15 and went to the writing pool at the University of St Yorkshire Evening Mail. A year later, she became a reporter for the paper, and at the age of 18, she became its first female editor. At the age of 20 she moved to London, where she became a columnist and editor of Fleet Street.

In 1961 she met German-born Hollywood film and television producer Robert Bradford, whom she married in London on Christmas Eve 1963, moved to New York in 1964 and remained together for 55 years until his death in July. 2019.

Called the “grand dame of blockbusters” and the “queen of the genre,” her books have sold more than 91 million copies to date and have been published in more than 40 languages ​​and 90 countries, according to her publisher.

Her husband Robert Bradford has adapted ten books for television or drama series.

When recently asked what would be on her epitaph, Barbara replied: “She fulfilled her dreams.”
