(Society) The case of the death of a military man that was exposed… Tribunal “The state pays compensation to bereaved families”

A court has issued a ruling requiring the state to compensate the grieving family of late chief Yeom Soon-deok, whose cause of death has not been determined for more than a decade due to a weak investigation by the military.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the defendant should pay a total of 90 million won in a compensation lawsuit filed by Yeoma’s grieving family against the state.

The court pointed out that the gendarmerie and police examined key physical evidence unjustifiably or insufficiently in the early stages of the incident and were therefore very insufficient to preserve the evidence.

He also admitted that the state was responsible for compensation, claiming that the perpetrator and the murder had not yet been precisely identified.

In December 2001, Sergeant Yeom, an Army soldier, died on his way home after drinking with men from the same unit.

The case subsequently remained unsolved and, belatedly, a new investigation was initiated, with the police identifying members of the unit who had been drinking alcohol together as suspects.

However, the prosecutor’s office did not initiate proceedings due to insufficient evidence, and the grieving family of First Class Yeom filed a lawsuit against the state in September 2018, maintaining that the investigation by the gendarmerie and police was poor.
