Tamil Nadu is one of the best places to travel if you want to get a glimpse into our country’s past and heritage. The state consists of several temples built by kings, which are visited by devotees from all over the country. One of the temples is built in a unique way and is one of the most popular tourist spots. Let us know more about this place and why it should be on your visit list.

The temple is called Kazhugumalai Vettuvan Koil and, according to Local18, it is carved into a hill. Interestingly, it is not visible from other sides of the hill. Known as Ellora in South India, here are the special features of this temple.

Kazhugumalai Vettuvan was built in the 8th century by the Pandya king. According to reports, Pandya King might have been Maranjadyan. It is believed to be the smallest of the ancient temples built before the Thanjavur temple.

The holy place was built by breaking the hill into the shape of the letter “P”. It was then carved from top to bottom with a chisel, adding information. Chisel marks on the rocks can still be seen today. The tower consists of idols of Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lord Narasimha and Lord Muruga. It is believed to have been built for Lord Shiva but was not completed due to unknown reasons. Carvings of idols can only be seen on the vimana and temple towers; no Dwarapalaka sculptures were carved at the entrance of the temple. According to beliefs, the Ganesha idol in the sanctum sanctoruim of the temple is supposed to be installed by the people of the place.
