A Durham police officer was injured on Monday while helping a struggling student at a local high school

According to Durham Public Schools, the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. Monday at Riverside High School and involved a student affairs officer.

Durham police said the reserve officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It is unclear whether the officer was the school’s SRO, as those positions are typically filled by the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, only one student was involved in the incident and he was not injured. Authorities took the student to the hospital for examination.
