My result: 1 hint

There’s no way today’s yellow is the easiest. And if so, it simply points the way to a relatively difficult-to-resolve connection. All four AUDIO APPLICATIONS – AUDIBLE, PANDORA, SHAZAM and TIDAL – are of course familiar to me, but I am a technology journalist and former music journalist. I seriously doubt the average person will notice all four of them. It looks more like the blue or even purple group.

To make matters worse, one of the words – SHAZAM – could have easily fit ABRACADABRA and PRESTO under MAGIC WORDS. Instead, the missing two were: PLEASE and THANK YOU – which gave me the opportune moment when I realized what the NYT had done here. Wise.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is slightly more difficult, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure answers.
