Northern Michigan man with hunting-related offenses charged with poaching

(FOX2)A northern Michigan man with hunting convictions has been arrested and charged with additional crimes after receiving information from Department of Natural Resources law enforcement.

Cecil Edward Day, 59, of Johannesburg, was arraigned on charges of possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with a blood alcohol content greater than 0.08% and possession of hunter orange.

The DNR is now seeking further charges after finding evidence of deer poaching.

Day was arrested on November 18 at his home in northern Michigan. Wildlife officers had previously learned that Day had exited his vehicle with a rifle and was shooting at deer on private property.

After conducting more interviews, officers found two additional deer that had been shot and left in the same area. That includes a large nine-point trophy, the DNR said in a news release.

Day was previously convicted from 2018 to 2020 of possession, theft of a deer from a motor vehicle, trespassing, hunting orange and possession of an unmarked deer.

Day is currently in the Otsego County Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing.
