HPD arrests man suspected of shooting at Kalihi police officers

The officers shot the suspect multiple times. He was transported to hospital in serious condition.

Honolulu police arrested a 47-year-old man suspected of shooting at officers in Kalihi on Sunday morning.

According to Honolulu Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan at a news conference, officers observed a Honda CRV committing a traffic violation near Aloha Stadium around 1:30 a.m. near Aloha Stadium. Officers determined that the vehicle had been stolen from Sandy Beach on October 14.

The vehicle was observed traveling east on Middle Street in Kalihi and turning onto Ahonui Street. Officers stopped the driver near Kuhio Park Terrace.

Logan said the driver fled on foot and shot at two officers. The officers then shot the suspect multiple times.

The suspect, identified as Blane Apostadiro, was transported to hospital in serious condition. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, unauthorized control of a motor vehicle and other crimes, according to the HPD log.

A ghost gun was found at the scene.

Police also arrested a 34-year-old passenger on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. Logan said he had numerous previous convictions.

The officers were placed on administrative leave. No other injuries were reported.

This is the sixth officer-involved shooting on Oahu, compared to three at this time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
