John Tinniswood, the oldest man in the world, has died at the age of 112.

According to the Guinness Book of Records (GWR), Tinniswood died on Monday at a nursing home in Southport, England.

“His last day was surrounded by music and love,” his family told GWR in a statement.

Be born August 26, 1912, Tinniswood has held the record for the world’s oldest living man since April 2024, following the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela.

According to GWR, Tinniswood had no specific explanation for how he managed to survive for so long, describing it as “pure luck”.

“You either live a long life or you live a short life and there’s not much you can do about it,” he told GWR earlier this year.

However, he had one piece of advice on how to stay healthy: do everything in moderation.

“If you drink too much, eat too much, or walk too much, if you do too much of anything, eventually you’re going to suffer,” he said.

And while he can’t tell them how to live for as long as he did, Tinniswood has some life advice for younger generations.

“Always do your best, whether you are learning something or teaching someone,” he added.

“Give it your all. Otherwise, it’s not worth worrying about.”

Tinniswood is survived by his daughter Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

“John had many great qualities. “He was intelligent, decisive, courageous, calm in every crisis, mathematically gifted and a great conversationalist,” the family said in a statement.

According to GWR, the oldest man in history was Jiroemon Kimura from Japan. He was born in 1897 and died in 2013 at the age of 116.

The oldest person in the world also died this year.

US-born Maria Branyas Morera died at the age of 117 years and 168 days, making her the eighth oldest person in history whose age could be verified, GWR said in a statement at the time.

The title of oldest person ever recorded goes to Jeanne Louise Calment.

According to GWR, she was born on February 21, 1875 and lived to be 122 years and 164 days.
