Foxconn is in talks with TN to expand its battery production operations

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn is reportedly in talks with the Tamil Nadu government to expand its battery manufacturing operations in India.

According to ET, citing people close to the investment, the TN government has asked Foxconn, the largest contract manufacturer operating in the country, to provide about 200 acres of land for the company’s proposed battery energy storage system (BESS) module.

A battery energy storage system typically blocks energy from renewable and non-renewable sources and stores it in batteries.

“Foxconn has not been finalized yet, but talks are in the final stages and the company is likely to proceed with the project in the identified area in Tamil Nadu, as mentioned by CEO Young Liu during his visit to India,” he added. the report stated.

In August, Liu, during his visit to India, allegedly revealed plans of a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer to set up a BESS unit in India.

The company intends to expand its operations towards gaining market share in the electric vehicle industry, and the first factory has already been opened in Taiwan.

It is worth noting that after discussions and approval by the state government, the unit in TN will be the second BESS unit in the world.

“The Tamil Nadu government has also given an incentive package to Foxconn,” the report quoted a source as saying.

He added that the state has offered Foxconn land near Manalur in Tiruvallur district.

The development comes weeks after the union government planned to invite tenders for the construction of a 10 gigawatt (GW) power plant. battery energy storage projectsreportedly strengthening India’s position in the energy storage segment.

Meanwhile, Foxconn also considered an investment of approximately $1 billion (INR 8,354) to set up a smartphone display module factory in TN, which would be another first of its kind for the company in India.
