The Downton Abbey star revealed that the cast sometimes “stinks” because their costumes are not allowed to be washed.

The beloved historical drama, set in post-Edwardian Britain, aired from 2010 to 2015 and chronicled the lives of the Crawley family, a British aristocratic clan, and their servants.

Sophie McShera, who played Daisy Mason on “Downton Abbey” and Ros McCain on “Waterloo Road,” shared some surprising behind-the-scenes details from the hit series.

She revealed that the wardrobe team has a strict “no wash” policy to keep outfits looking period-correct.

In a 2013 interview with the Daily Mail, the 39-year-old actress explained: “We really stink because they don’t wash our costumes. They have these strange patches that are sewn into the armpits and which they wash separately.”

Following the success of the television series, the story was expanded into two feature films. The first, Downton Abbey (2019), picked up where the series left off, while Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022) took the family on a new adventure set in the south of France.

Downton Abbey 3 is currently in production and filming in Hampshire, England. The film’s premiere is scheduled for September 12, 2025.

The cast included Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech and Penelope Wilton.

Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera and Douglas Reith also reprized their roles, alongside Dominic West, who played Guy Dexter in the second film, and Paul Giamatti, who he played Cory Grantham’s brother, Harold Levinson, in the previous Christmas special.

Dockery has previously shared that filming the third film was “emotional.”

In a YouTube video, Dockery said: “This is an amazing and emotional experience. It’s great to be together again.

“You come back together and it seems like no time has passed at all. We’re excited to announce that we’ve started production on the third Downton Abbey film. We can’t wait to see you.”
