One person is dead, two are in critical condition after inhaling toxic fumes at Parawada Pharma City

The incident occurred at a private company located at Parawada Pharma City in Anakapalli district on Tuesday around 4.30 pm and the affected employees started showing symptoms around midnight, the official said.

“Without taking any precautions, workers cleaned up fumes emanating from the reactor, where high pressure had built up while mixing hydrochloric acid (HCL) and chloroform. While doing so, they inhaled the fumes,” the official told PTI.

However, the affected workers did not develop symptoms immediately but started showing up around midnight in the form of coughing and breathing problems, police said.

Nine employees were taken to hospital. He added that one of them died, two were in critical condition and the remaining six were undergoing treatment.

According to police, the company’s management did not warn employees about the dangers of inhaling toxic fumes.

The police announced that an investigation would be initiated in connection with this event.
