An IIT Delhi student died and three others were injured when a landslide hit them as they entered a trench near the Lothal archaeological site in Gujarat for research, police said.

Surabhi Verma (23), a PhD student at IIT Delhi, along with other victims were at the ancient civilization site in the Indus Valley, about 80 km from Ahmedabad, to conduct research work when the rock collapsed, he said.

A team of four researchers, two from IIT Delhi and the same number from IIT Gandhinagar, were in the vicinity of archaeological remains in the Harappan port town of Lothal to collect soil samples for testing, said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Om Prakash Jat.

The officer said the four had entered a hole dug 10 feet deep for the purpose when the wall collapsed, burying them under a mound of earth.

“A researcher from IIT Delhi, identified as Surabhi Verma, died on the spot. Three others were rescued and taken to hospital, where their condition is stable, he said.
