Court records show that a custody dispute led to Lee’s fatal shooting at the summit

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) – Court documents revealed a second person may have been involved in a fatal shooting in Lee’s Summit that likely stemmed from a custody dispute.

Affidavit of Probable Cause Filed by Lee’s Summit Police Department on Saturday, November 23, indicates that Keith J. Marshall, 31, is charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting, indicates that a disturbance was reported at the home of Marshall’s ex-girlfriend around 8 a.m. Friday.

Investigators said they were called to an address that turned out to be the home of Marshall’s ex-girlfriend, their two children and her new fiancé, Craig Scott, 51. The caller, Marshall’s ex-girlfriend, provided a private number she believed belonged to him and called three times. times earlier that morning, but she didn’t answer.

Law enforcement officials said that when Marshall’s vehicle was seen outside the couple’s home, Scott went outside to talk to him. However, witnesses said Marshall and an unknown man “launched” Scott and began attacking him.

Witnesses told investigators that Scott tried to run inside, but the other two men forced their way into the house before shots rang out. Scott was found dead in his home by his fiancé and roommate.

Police indicated that multiple surveillance cameras saw Marshall’s vehicle heading in the same direction as Scott’s home at the time of the shooting. A search warrant was executed on Marshall’s home – which it turned out was shared with his parents – and his vehicle. A number of items were confiscated, including brass knuckles and a holster.

Investigators revealed that in the weeks leading up to the shooting, Marshall and his ex-girlfriend were involved in multiple custody disputes over their children together. In fact, she went to his house the day before the shooting to retrieve one of their children, whom he refused to return.

Lee’s Summit police said Marshall’s parents also confirmed this to investigators. They said he returned home the morning of the shooting before they had a conversation that led to a call with their attorney and Marshall, who turned himself in.

The Jackson County, Missouri, U.S. Attorney’s Office charged Marshall with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.

As for the second person seen by witnesses during the riot, the Lee’s Summit Police Department told KCTV5 the investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released about this investigation.

As of Wednesday, November 27, Marshall remains behind Jackson County bars on $250,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was held on Monday, a bail review hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, December 4 at 1 p.m., and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for December 23 at 10:30 a.m.
