CSP says a driver who was involved in a two-vehicle crash on I-25 near the monument was killed moments later

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – A driver involved in a crash on Interstate 25 near Monument died moments later in a second crash, Colorado State Patrol troopers said Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol received reports of a two-vehicle crash involving a Jeep and a Subaru Outback in the northbound lane of I-25 near Monument around 10:35 a.m.

Investigators said both drivers pulled over to the left shoulder of northbound I-25, where they exited their vehicles to exchange information. Shortly afterwards, a pickup truck speeding along the highway hit vehicles parked on the left shoulder.

During this accident, one of the drivers in the first accident was hit by a Subaru Outback. According to CSP, the impact pushed him into the southbound lane of I-25, where he was struck by oncoming traffic.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the drivers who hit the person remained at the scene, but other drivers who may have been involved drove away before investigators could interview them, police said.

I-25 northbound was closed between milepost 158 and detoured to W. Baptist Rd. for several hours, and traffic on the highway southbound was maintained in one lane. The highway reopened at 2:30 p.m

The Colorado State Patrol Traffic Crimes Unit is currently investigating the crash. Anyone in the area at the time of the crash who may have dash cam video or information that could assist in the investigation is asked to contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 719-544-2424.

“Colorado State Patrol reminds drivers to slow down in heavy traffic and when approaching hazards,” a CSP spokesman said Wednesday. “Secondary accidents occur when drivers are unable to react in time to avoid an unusual situation, and often these accidents can be very dangerous because people are not protected by the vehicle.”

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once family is notified.
