On Wednesday, police said a 25-year-old man working as a butcher allegedly strangled his live-in partner and then cut her body into 40-50 pieces in a forested area in Jharkhand’s Khunti district.

The accused, identified as Naresh Bhengra, was arrested.

The case came to light about two weeks after the murder, when a stray dog was found with human body parts near Jordag village in Jariagarh police station on November 24.

Bhengra had been in an ongoing relationship with the deceased, a 24-year-old woman, also from Khunti district in Tamil Nadu, for the past few years. Some time ago, he returned to Jharkhand, married another woman without telling his partner, and returned to the southern state without his wife, who joined her.

“The brutal incident took place on November 8 when they reached Khunti as the accused, who had married another woman, did not want to take her home. Instead, he took her to the forest near his house in Jordag village of Jariagarh police station and cut her body into pieces. The man has been arrested,” Superintendent of Police Khunti Aman Kumar told PTI.

Inspector Ashok Singh, who investigated the case, said the man worked at a butcher shop in Tamil Nadu and was an expert at cutting chicken.

“He admitted to cutting the woman’s body parts into 40-50 pieces and then leaving them in the forest for wild animals to feed on. Police recovered several body parts on November 24 after a dog was seen with a hand in the area,” Singh told PTI.

Singh said the woman, who was unaware of his marriage, pressured him to return to Khunti. After reaching Ranchi on November 24, they boarded a train and went to the man’s village.

“As part of the plan, the man took her to Khunti near his house in an auto-rickshaw and asked her to wait. He came back with a sharp weapon and after raping her, he strangled her with her dupatta. He then cut the body into 40-50 pieces and left for his house to stay with his wife,” Singh said.

However, the woman informed her mother that she had boarded the train and would be living with her partner, the police officer added.

After the body parts were recovered, a bag containing the murdered woman’s belongings, including her Aadhaar card, was also found in the forest. The woman’s mother was called to the scene and identified her daughter’s belongings.

“The mother suspected the man behind the crime, who after being detained by the police confessed to cutting the woman into pieces,” the officer added.

The incident sent shock waves among the people of the region and the Shraddha Walker murder case of 2022 is still fresh in their minds.

Walker was killed by her partner, who cut her body into pieces and then threw them into the jungle in Mehrauli, south Delhi.
