Mesa man accused of shooting at trooper during chase that ended with Gilbert crashing

Authorities said a man was arrested after firing shots at a trooper during a chase in the East Valley that ended with a rollover.

The incident occurred on November 26 around 7:30 p.m., when approx Arizona Department of Public Safety – said a police officer who noticed a gray Nissan sedan speeding westbound lanes of Loop 202 near Power Road.

The police tried to stop the car, but the driver did not stop and started a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the perpetrator allegedly shot at the officer. DPS claims that the soldier was unharmed and that no bullets hit his patrol vehicle.

“At this time, we have no reports of shots hitting other sites or vehicles,” DPS added.

The suspect lost control of the car while exiting the highway at ul The Williams Field Way. DPS says it hit three other vehicles and overturned. The suspect was detained by soldiers. It was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Mendez, a Mess resident.

Mendez suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident and was taken to hospital. DPS says he will be jailed on multiple felony charges.

The area’s Williams Field stadium was closed overnight but has since reopened.
