Alabama A&M says the player is in stable condition hours after his death was announced

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. remains in the hospital with a head injury suffered during an October game, the school said hours after announcing his death.

On Wednesday, the athletics department sent a recall regarding Burnett’s status. who was injured during the game against Alabama State on October 26. The second statement said the first news of Burnett’s death came “from an immediate family member on Tuesday evening.”

“Our staff followed the wishes of the family member and informed the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate event,” it said in a statement Wednesday evening. “After today’s conversation with a representative of the UAB hospital, we learned that the man is alive.

“We express our immediate regret for the spread of false information. However, we are very pleased to know that Medrick is in stable condition.”

Statement regarding gofundme.com Burnett’s website wrote Wednesday: “Please keep praying, he is going through a difficult time but we are hanging in there until the very end. God, give us the strength to keep the faith.”

The redshirt freshman from Lakewood, Calif., joined the Alabama A&M team in the summer after beginning his college career at Grambling State.

Burnett played in seven games and made five tackles, including three against Austin Peay.
