A public celebration of the life of Sea Bears’ Chad Posthumus has been announced

The family of Chad Posthumus has announced a public observance in honor of the professional basketball player and captain of his hometown Winnipeg Sea Bears who died last week.

The event will be held on December 6 at Springs Church, 595 Lagimodiere Blvd. and will begin at 3:30 p.m., a post on the Sea Bears Instagram page reads.

Posthumus died on November 20, less than two weeks after suffering a brain aneurysm on November 9.

He underwent surgery, but complications occurred that left him in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The Posthumus family, in a statement released by the Sea Bears the day after Chad’s death, said he died of a “catastrophic stroke resulting from surgical complications.”

He was 33 years old.

The 6-foot-4 forward was born and raised in Winnipeg and played basketball in high school for the River East Collegiate Kodiaks.

He was the first signing in Sea Bears franchise history after the team joined the Canadian Elite Basketball League in 2023, and most recently served as team captain.

Prior to the Sea Bears game, Posthumus played with the Canadian national basketball team and the CEBL’s Saskatchewan Rattlers, helping the team win its first-ever championship in the league’s inaugural season in 2019.

He signed with the Ottawa BlackJacks of the CEBL in 2021 and spent two seasons there, becoming the first player in CEBL history to go “20-20” after recording 23 points and 20 rebounds.

In lieu of flowers, the Posthumus family asked people to consider making a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or “taking future community initiatives in honor of Chad.”
